Stay Satisfied Longer with #PowerfulProtein

I’m a planner. When it comes to meal options, I have to plan ahead. My schedule is too hectic to leave what’s for lunch or dinner up to chance. And it’s usually when I don’t know what is on the menu and I’m too tired to think that I can make poor choices.

That’s especially true when faced with the question of “what’s for lunch?” at the office. I hate the wasted time of running out of the building, and I definitely don’t have time to sit down in a restaurant. So the outcome is usually finding whatever fast food restaurant is closest to the office that will get me back to my desk pronto. That’s not very satisfying and I usually find I’m hungry again late in the afternoon.

So instead, I like to take my lunch with me to work. Often that means leftovers from the night before or a sandwich I’ve made with ingredients I’ve personally put together. Not only is that a big time- and money-saver, it’s also usually better for me.

But sometimes there’s just isn’t time to make either of those things happen. And that’s where my advanced planning saves the day and satisfies my hunger. You see I actively plan for those days where I don’t have time to make a homemade lunch or snack from scratch by making sure my freezer is stocked with high-protein meal options like the new STOUFFER’S® Fit Kitchen.

STOUFFER'S Fit Kitchen at Walmart #PowerfulProtein #CollectiveBias #ad - Steak Fajita

Just how high is the protein? Each STOUFFER’S® Fit Kitchen meal option is packed with 25 grams of protein or more. The STOUFFER’S® Fit Kitchen Steak Fajita smells intoxicating coming out of the microwave – and it’s ready in under 10 minutes. Close your eyes, breathe in deep and take a bite. You’re tastebuds will think they’re in Mexico! It’s a tender prime steak in a smoked red chile sauce (see the green and red peppers!) and it comes with a side of brown rice (my fave!) that is seasoned with black beans and corn.

STOUFFER'S Fit Kitchen at Walmart #PowerfulProtein #CollectiveBias #ad - Cilantro Lime Chicken with fork

The steak fajita was deliciously satisfying and quite good. But I think my favorite is the Cilantro Lime Chicken. The white meat chicken mixed in with the brown rice in a verde tomatillo sauce was protein perfection. The red bell peppers gave it a pop of color and a sweet simmering heat.

Like I said, I have to plan for those days when I don’t have time to make lunch. So whenever I need to stock up the freezer or fridge, I go to my local Walmart and hang a left down the single serve entrees aisle in the frozen foods section.

I found all of the STOUFFER’S® Fit Kitchen meals in a special high-protein section of the freezer.

They’re easy to spot. And they come in some great meal options, like STOUFFER’S® Fit Kitchen Steak Fajita, Cilantro Lime Chicken, Rotisserie Seasoned Turkey, Bourbon Steak, Oven Roasted Chicken and Monterey Chicken.

I’ve found that STOUFFER’S® Fit Kitchen meals are also great for satisfying late night snack cravings. With summer schedules, I might miss a meal or eat earlier than usual to enjoy the great weather outside. Sometimes I get a strong hunger pang about 10 pm, which is too late to eat something big but also too early to go to bed and wait until morning for breakfast. I feel better choosing something packed with lean protein instead of, say, chips or popcorn.

Quality Oil Fuels Better Performance for Road Trips…and Picnics

canta mato salad #FuelTheLove #ad

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #FuelTheLove #CollectiveBias

When summer arrives, I get very excited. Excited because summer means fresh fruits and vegetables. And summer also means it’s time to jump in the car with my four pugs to take a road trip. When I can combine the two – like a road trip that ends in a fresh foods-filled picnic – I’m in heaven.

But before I head out on any road trip, I’ve got to gas up the car and have the oil levels checked. I mean who wants to break down on the side of the road in the summer heat? Just like your body needs water to hydrate and run properly, your car needs quality gas and oil to perform its best. [On the night of my high school graduation, my car broke down after midnight in the middle of the country with no houses in site. I was stuck for hours – this was before cell phones were invented – and I promised myself that would never happen again. So I always make sure my car is serviced and ready to roll before heading out of town.]

So I drove to my local Walmart Super Store and dropped off my Nissan Rogue (The best car ever! And the first car I’ve ever really loved.) at the Auto Center for an oil change and to get all the fixings for a picnic.

Pennzoil Summer Rollback #FuelTheLove #CollectiveBias #ad

I learned that Pennzoil was offering a Rollback price at Walmart Automotive Care Center Stores until September 9, 2015.  I always get the Platinum Full Synthetic motor oil because it provides the best protection and cleanliness among all Pennzoil oils.

Pennzoil Summer Rollback #FuelTheLove #CollectiveBias #ad

I trust Pennzoil and have used it in my cars for years. It helps clean out the sludge that other oils can leave behind, which keeps my car in top performance. And I like that Pennzoil provides a free warranty for its products.Pennzoil Summer Rollback #FuelTheLove #CollectiveBias #ad

I dropped my car off with the friendly Automotive Care Center Department Manager, and I was on my way to get the ingredients for a fresh tomato and cantaloupe salad. [Spoiler Alert: They were done with my oil change before I was done grabbing my grocery goodies. How convenient is that!]

tomato cantaloupe salad Pennzoil Summer Rollback #FuelTheLove #CollectiveBias #ad

There’s a lot to love about this recipe. It has only four ingredients. And the key to its refreshing, sophisticated taste is quality extra virgin olive oil and fresh mint. Seriously. A quality olive oil can make all the ingredients of a dish work together beautifully, much like how a quality automotive oil can help your car’s engine work more smoothly.

tomato cantaloupe salad Pennzoil Summer Rollback #FuelTheLove #CollectiveBias #ad

Now I’m ready (as is my car) for a summer filled with road trips, picnics and fun. If you could go anywhere on a road trip picnic, where would you go and what would you bring in your picnic basket?

Where will the road take you this summer?

When It Counts: A Smooth Shave Puts My Best Face Forward

Collective Bias disclosure 2014

I’ve always had sensitive skin. So I tend to avoid shaving until the very last possible moment. And during the summer, I get even lazier – only shaving when I’ve got an important event like a family wedding, a business meeting with a new client or when I’m meeting someone for the very first time.  But truth be told, for me the best way to make a solid first impression is always a clean shave.

Being part Native American, my facial hair doesn’t grow in thick. So I could not shave for five years and never look like anything close to Grizzly Adams. But my face and neck do get fuzzy. And now that I’ve passed middle age, some of that is growing in as gray fuzz. Not pretty. Not sexy.

I also work from a home office on most days, so my interaction with clients is often limited to telephone or email. Even when I Skype, I don’t use the video feature. So when I finally do have an important face-to-face meeting to prepare for, I rely on my Gillette Fusion ProGlide. I’ve been a loyal customer for decades; I like how close a shave I can get with the five stacked blades. And it’s a huge time saver!

When #CollectiveBias asked me to participate in this #SmoothSummer campaign, I was excited to try the new FlexBall Technology that’s built into the handle. I ran over to my neighborhood Walmart and easily found it in the RAZORS aisle.

shave #SmoothSummer #CollectiveBias

I tend to work with clients on multi-month engagements, so I only do about half a dozen new client pitches each year. So when I do have a meeting with a potential new client, it’s important. I don’t get a second chance to make a good first impression. And a fuzzy face just won’t cut it.

I was curious just “how different” this new Gillette razor would be compared to the previous ProGlide razor I’d been using. I was honestly surprised just how much the FlexBall hugs the curves and contours of my face. [When you have a ‘fat face’ like me, there are lots of curves and contours!] And on those mornings when it’s a little harder to wake up, my eyes just follow the “bouncing” orange ball!

That “baby smooth face guy” is about to make an appearance in the mirror.

Ouch! My face feels like a porcupine! Thankfully this new Gillette ProGlide Razor with FlexBall Technology is tough enough to tame my face and nimble enough to handle the curves.

As much as I like not having to shave in the summer, when it counts you’ve got to go smooth to put your best face forward. I’d hire me!

Perfectly Painted Pop Culture Easter Eggs [video]

What do Pussy Riot, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, Sandra Bullock, The Tonight Show’s Questlove and Pharrell’s big hat have in common? They’re all immortalized in this pop culture “AWE Inspiring Easter Egg Art” video – which totally cracked me up! Pun intended.

I don’t know which of these yolk-filled masterpieces were my favorites. It may be a tie between John Travolta | Adele Dazeem and the always-falling Jennifer Lawrence. Which one is your fave?

Weathering the Sinus Pain & Congestion Worries of Spring

2014-03-20_12-28-53

The first day of spring means warmer weather is on its way. For me, it also means getting ready for a season of sinus congestion and sinus migraines.

The whole “March comes in-like-a-lion, out-like-a-lamb description” is because the weather patterns this time of year are a constant collision of high/low pressure cells, warm/cold air masses. These rapid changes in barometric pressure will often trigger for me an intense sinus migraine. And I absolutely hate it when I get a sinus migraine because I can’t plan for them; I can only manage them when they happen.  That means minimizing the pain and congestion as much as possible, and then muddling through my day.

It’s not only springtime when I get sinus migraines. They also hit me in the late fall when the weather starts to get colder. Last fall, I got hit with one of the worst cases of sinus congestion and pain that I’ve ever experienced, which then turned into a sinus migraine. It caused me to cancel going to a concert with Kelly Clarkson and Maroon 5. For me, this wasn’t just any concert. I spent big $$$ for a VIP ticket and special seating.

You see I’m a HUGE FAN and a member of the Maroon 5 Fan Club; I’ve seen them in concert multiple times. I’ve even traveled to Amsterdam to hear them in concert with Sara Bareilles (another musical fave). Earlier last year, I had to cancel a road trip to see Maroon 5 play at the Gulfport Music Festival in Mississippi. There was no way I could drive under such constant sinus pain and congestion, let alone enjoy the show.

That trip cancellation was a disappointment, but this latest concert cancellation was even more depressing. You see the opening act was Kelly Clarkson. I have loved Kelly Clarkson since she won the original American Idol competition. I have every record she’s made, but I’ve never seen her live in concert. I was so psyched when she teamed up with Maroon 5 for a national tour, and I didn’t hesitate to spend some serious cash to be in the VIP section and to have the chance to meet the band after the show.

As a longtime sinus sufferer, I’m aware that I could get sidelined at any time if the sinus pain and congestion get too bad. But that doesn’t make it any less disappointing when I have to cancel big plans for a special event. I’ve learned that the best I can do is manage to it when it happens. SUDAFED® gets that, so they’ve launched the SUDAFED REPLAY™ Sweepstakes to help sinus sufferers, like me, relive their most regrettable, missed out moments.

With Walgreens Refill Reminders, I Never Forget Important Medication Refills For Bing & Baxter

Collective Bias Social Fabric

Walgreens_storelocatorWalgreens, headquartered in Deerfield, IL (a Chicago suburb), has almost 9,000 stores throughout the United States. They are literally everywhere; I have at least 8 Walgreens stores within a half-mile radius of my home. So it’s more than convenient to get medication refills no matter which direction I’m heading.

I’ve been getting prescriptions filled at my local Walgreens since I first moved to Chicago in 1988. And as someone who’s constantly on the go, I appreciate anything that saves me time and hassle. It’s easy to get information about medications and to order online prescription refills from the Walgreens website. And I notice they are continually improving the website user experience to make it easy (and fun) to manage all of your healthcare needs online.

Like most consumers today, being on the go for me means only having my smart phone at hand — and not a computer screen. So for about the last six months or so, I’ve been predominantly using the free Walgreens app on my iPhone. It makes managing refills effortless. And that says something because in addition to my prescription medications for allergies, TMJ, and arthritis, I have dogs that require daily medications.

I actually have four pugs (yes, four!). All but one are on daily medication for physical and/or neurological issues. When I first signed up for the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the family membership option covers everyone in your immediate family, including pets. So I manage prescriptions and medications for my dogs Bing and Baxter as part of my family prescriptions on Walgreens.com or via the Walgreens mobile app. Like any proud pug parent, I have to show you my two boys, who are rescues I adopted in 2011.

My dog Bing takes daily medications.

Bing, an apricot fawn pug, turns 8 years old next month. Bing has no impulse control, so he takes a daily medication to help him be less frenetic.

My dog Baxter has several food and seasonal allergies that require medication.

Baxter, who’s also an apricot fawn pug, will be 4 years old in the fall. Baxter has severe food and seasonal allergies that require constant medication and management.

With the Walgreens mobile app, I can look up a prescription and request a refill, or I can scan a prescription bottle with the camera on the phone. For long-term prescriptions, I set up the auto-refill option so I don’t have to worry about remembering.

Walgreens_RXconfirmation

And when the refill is ready, I’ll get a phone call, an email or a text (or all 3!). You can control how you want to be reminded when your #WalgreensRX  prescription is ready.

Walgreens_RXconfirmation2

You can do much more than order prescription refills with the Walgreens mobile app, including seeing the latest weekly advertisements to find out what’s on sale.

Walgreens_ad1

And if you’re a member of the Walgreens Balance Rewards program, you can check your points totals to see how close you are to the next reward level.

Walgreens_balancerewards2

I also use the Walgreens mobile app when I check out. I simply show the cashier, who scans it so I get real-time Balance Rewards points deposited to my account. The last time I picked up my prescriptions at the Walgreens pharmacy, the pharmacist scanned my Balance Rewards card on my iPhone and it seamlessly tracked my Prescriptions Savings Club information along with my Balance Rewards. That’s one of the ways Walgreens makes my life easier; I literally don’t have to think about anything but physically picking up my prescription when it’s ready. And I don’t even have to do that, if I don’t want to because Walgreens offers free shipping on prescription orders. How easy is that!

2014: Getting Back On Track with Lean Cuisine #WowThatsGood

Getting Back on Track with Lean Cuisine

Collective Bias Social Fabric

Are you still feeling a bit ‘hung over’ from the holidays? I am. It’s so easy to over indulge at family gatherings and social functions with sweets and other foods that are better for you in moderation. But feeling guilty isn’t going to solve anything. The hardest thing for me to do in any aspect of my life is to achieve balance. I’m usually an ‘all-in’ kind-of-guy, whether it’s at work, with family and friends – anything. Achieving balance within each part of my life and among each of those parts is a personal challenge for me. Especially when it comes to a balanced approach to eating. I want to start 2014 strong by making a conscious effort toward getting back on track. Nestle® has a number of products, especially an expanded line of Lean Cuisine® prepared foods, snacks and Skinny Cow® chocolates, that I’m going to lean on to make the process a little less daunting.

I practically lived on Lean Cuisine back in college, especially the Spaghetti & Meatballs and Meatloaf & Mashed Potatoes. They were affordable (important for a college student with no real income), well-portioned and quite tasty. After college, when I first started working in downtown Chicago’s Financial District, I depended on Lean Cuisine for a quick, affordable and satisfying lunch. Eating out everyday was expensive, and trying to get out of a skyscraper building just to grab a quick bite would take at least 20 minutes each way.  That’s anything BUT quick! And there weren’t many healthy options that were easily accessible, so Lean Cuisine was a great option. I remember stocking up my freezer with Lean Cuisine’s Swedish Meatballs at least once a month to have on hand for lunch at the office. And their French bread pizza was my go-to late night snack of choice!

Fast forward to 2014. While I want to be conscious of my meal choices, some things I’m not going to give up…like my morning coffee. Before I started using CoffeeMate®’s Sugar-Free French Vanilla creamer, I’d use sugar and half-and-half to create a cafe au lait concoction. But with Sugar-Free French Vanilla creamer, I don’t have to add anything else. That’s a great way to reduce some of the excess sugar that can sneak into your food and drink.

Nestle CoffeeMate French Vanilla Sugar Free Creamer

Getting Back On Track

One of the things that can shoot down any attempt to make better meal choices is poor planning. So I made myself a list of what I needed and headed off to my local Walmart to stock up my freezer. I was pleasantly surprised that in addition to the classic Lean Cuisine meals I have loved for years, there are several new cuisine lines featuring a staggering array of choices, including:

  • LEAN CUISINE® Morning Collection™ Turkey Sausage English Muffin [I can’t wait to try this!]
  • LEAN CUISINE® Simple Favorites™ Macaroni and Cheese
  • LEAN CUISINE® Wrap ADDITIONS™ Creamy Balsamic Chicken
  • LEAN CUISINE® Culinary Collection™ Sesame Chicken
  • LEAN CUISINE® Culinary Collection™ Three Cheese & Spinach Stuffed Pretzels

Here are some of my favorite Lean Cuisine dishes, snacks and Skinny Cow chocolate treats. You can tell when you see them, and especially when you taste them, that they’re all made with quality ingredients.

Nestle SkinnyCow at Walmart

The Skinny Cow divine filled chocolates are available at Walmart. My favorite is the milk chocolate filled with caramel!

Lean Cuisine Culinary Collection Sesame Chicken

As you can see, the actual Lean Cuisine Sesame Chicken dish looks exactly like the image on the packaging (below).

See what I mean! And I could taste the top quality of the sesame breaded chicken tenderloins. #WowThatsGood
Lean Cuisine Wrap Additions Creamy Balsamic Chicken 1

It was fun putting together the creamy balsamic chicken wrap. It takes about 30 seconds to spread out the balsamic…

Lean Cuisine Wrap Additions Creamy Balsamic Chicken 2

…then add the Lean Cuisine chicken and veggies…and you’re ready to roll the wrap. There’s enough for two small wraps or one large wrap!

Lean Cuisine Culinary Collection 3 Cheese and Spinach Stuffed Pretzels

Every balanced meal program needs snack options. And I fell in love with these stuffed pretzels. They look a bit small right out of the package, but they puff while they’re being cooked in the microwave. Totally satisfying! Each box has two servings — just in case you want to share. Sharing is not mandatory!

Right now, Lean Cuisine is offering a 10-Day TRY-IT program which includes:

  • Personalized menu of 10 dishes via email
  • Lean Cuisine coupon for a buy-9-get-1-free offer via email
  • Access to a special offer Skinny Cow coupon (up to $5.49).
  • Entry into the Ultimate TRY-IT Sweepstakes for a chance to win $10,000

It’s simple to participate. Enjoy Lean Cuisine protein-packed dishes for 10 days. If you don’t feel great after 10 days, Lean Cuisine offers a money-back guarantee.

I’m on Day 3 of the 10-Day TRY-IT program, and so far my favorite has been the stuffed pretzels for a snack and the sesame chicken for lunch. Share your favorite Lean Cuisine dish in the comments section below, and let’s get back on track together!

Are You Ready To Twerk Your Turkey?

Thanksgiving is just a week away. Yikes! Even with a later-than-usual date this year, it still feels like it’s coming far too fast. Each year when Thanksgiving approaches, it can sometimes invoke a panic attack. It’s the stress of planning all the details: holding the newspaper and mail, rescheduling the dog walker, planning the logistics for taking 4 dogs on the road to visit out-of-town family, getting laundry and dry cleaning done so you have something to wear, and (finally) figuring out what dish to make to contribute to the family Thanksgiving feast that is portable, delicious and won’t cause a break down in the kitchen before the holiday arrives. Normal stuff that just requires too much forethought and decision-making for my brain right now.

This year, I’m trying to keep calm by remembering to breathe and appreciate the moment – and even laugh when you can to attack any stress build up. To that end, I wanted to share this fun little video from LogoTV that encourages you to “twerk your turkey” at Thanksgiving. After you watch it, I’d be curious who you think does twerking better? The current twerking queen Miley Cyrus or the turkey? My $ is on the turkey, fo shure!

Refrigerator Revelations

Happy Clean Your Refrigerator Day, y’all!

That’s right, November 15 is the official day each year when we’re supposed to clean out the fridge. [Honestly, I think this needs to be a monthly event, rather than an annual holiday!]

Some say this day was invented by Whirlpool, but that may just be the ramblings of confused conspiracy theorists who wandered into the kitchen. It’s also National Bundt Day, but I’m too busy cleaning out the refrigerator to bake a bundt cake. Maybe tomorrow! Whoever created this day, it’s a good reminder to straighten up the fridge, clean it out and make room for all the holiday dishes we’ll be whipping up over the next several weeks.

Are you one of those people who snoops in the bathroom medicine cabinet when you visit another’s home? I’m kind of that way, but with refrigerators. I try to live by the credo that you should not judge someone by material things. But truth be told, if I come to your house and there’s a legitimate reason for me to open your refrigerator door, then I am going to do that. And I am going to judge you by the contents thereof.

Call me shallow, but you can learn a lot about someone by the of milk they have (I’m a 1% guy) or checking out the variety of dairy products they stash (and their expiration dates). Me, I’ll have the same package of shredded mozzarella unopened for 8 months. I like cheese, but I don’t eat it plain and I rarely cook with it. My nieces call me crazy because they can each consume a package in a week. They also think it’s odd that I don’t have ketchup in the house. [It’s hard to argue that point, but I will.]

What do the contents of your refrigerator reveal about you? Here’s what my refrigerator looked like earlier today before any clean up.

IMG_1179

You’ll noticed it’s filled with lots (and lots and lots) of coffee creamer. I freely admit that I am addicted to Lucerne’s cinnamon vanilla flavored non-dairy creamer. Truth be told, there are about 5 bottles there today but I usually have at least 8 – 12 bottles on hand. Lucerne is exclusively carried in Chicago by Dominicks and Safeway (their parent company) just announced they are closing or selling all 40+ Dominicks stores after Christmas. So I’m beginning to hoard the creamer until I can find a new brand I like as much. [A bit reminiscent of when Mary Tyler Moore hoarded Tab in her garage when Coca-Cola announced they would stop making it. But Tab has a longer shelf life than refrigerated coffee creamer. And I’m sure Mary Tyler Moore has a larger garage than I do.]

And here is the door of my fridge, which is desperately in need of a culling. I’ve got far too many condiment bottles that are partially used. And for those eagle eyes out there, you’ll see I keep my milk in the refrigerator door. That’s a huge no-no because the door is usually the warmest spot inside the refrigerator. I know better, but I don’t care. Feel free to judge me.

IMG_1173

The meat drawer is in good shape with some ground turkey and bacon. I think the worst part of my refrigerator in terms of messiness is the freezer drawer. I try to label containers before they go into the deep freeze, but you can see (here’s the photographic proof) that most of the containers aren’t labeled. Again, I should know better. But sometimes it’s just easier to delude yourself into thinking you’ll remember exactly what is inside each container.

IMG_1182

IMG_1185

I obviously have some work to do to get my refrigerator cleaned up and ready for the upcoming holidays. And you better get to work on yours, too. Because you never know when someone might drop by for a refrigerator reveal!
